Hydration is the name of the game in the summer. Signs of dehydration include dizziness, headache, muscle cramps, dark yellow pee, and dry skin or mouth. Make sure you always have water on-hand by outfitting yourself with a high-capacity reusable water bottle and carrying it with you on-the-go. If you’re engaging in physical activity, drinking something with electrolytes can help replenish them too.

Another way to reduce summer health risks is to watch what you eat at summer outings. Heat and food poisoning can go hand-in-hand because of how quickly certain foods can spoil. Culprit ingredients include meat, dairy, eggs, and mayo, since they can become home to harmful bacteria after a few hours out of the fridge. That might mean steering clear of traditional picnic foods like potato salad, coleslaw, and any meat when you’re not sure how it was stored or prepared.

  1. Wear sunscreen that’s good for your skin

Prolonged sun exposure comes with a whole host of risks, from premature aging and sunburn to skin cancer, so it’s well worth following the summer health tip to take the extra few minutes to apply that SPF protection. If you’re often outdoors in an area with ticks, you can treat boots and clothing with a permethrin solution to keep those little guys away from your skin.

Another one of our summer health tips is for all those water lovers out there. Yeast infections love damp, warm conditions, so if you practically live at the pool or lake all summer, make a point of promptly changing into dry clothes when you’re done with your swim.

Hearing health is sometimes a forgotten element of overall health, but it’s important to protect your ears from extremely loud noises that could be damaging. Firework explosions can reach unsafe levels of 150-175 decibels, which means ear-protection time. Fortunately, foam earplugs are inexpensive, so keep a handful in your bag and pass them out when it’s time for the show.

It’s extra important to stay cool when you’re pregnant since your body is already at an elevated temperature and undergoing other changes as your baby develops.
