One of our tips for losing weight in a healthy way is to sneak exercise into your routine. One of our tips for losing weight in a healthy way is to sneak exercise into your routine.

  1. Sneak exercise into your daily routine

Not only does exercise burn calories for weight loss, but it also has a wide array of other health benefits. From your heart to your brain, physical activity helps you be your best self. And it doesn't have to mean getting up at 5 a.m. to hit the gym, either (unless you want to). You can sneak healthy movement into your day with simple changes to your routine, for instance:

  • If you usually take the elevator, switch to the stairs
  • Consider walking or biking to work or other daily stops in the warmer months
  • Replace your desk chair with an exercise ball or standing desk, or try these simple exercises at your desk
  • Lift weights or do a home workout while you're watching your favorite TV show on nights and weekends
  • Join your kids or grandkids during outside playtime

  1. Make sure you're eating enough

Cutting your calories can be important for weight loss, but if you attempt to restrict your intake too drastically, it can inhibit your progress. Even while you’re losing weight, your body still needs enough nutrients to maintain muscle, increase metabolism, and stay healthy and energized. So how many calories should you eat to lose weight? It depends on your age, current weight, height, activity level, and other factors. Use this calorie calculator to help you estimate, and be sure to consult your doctor or registered dietitian to arrive at a realistic eating plan that factors in your body's unique needs.

  1. Prioritize healthy foods

Eating foods with plenty of fiber, like produce and whole grains, can promote the feeling of fullness when you want to lose weight in a healthy way. Avoid sugar and foods with "simple" carbs, like white rice and white bread, which can give you a short burst of energy but may leave you hungry before your next meal time. Finally, stock up on healthy snacks that are easy to grab and go, like mixed nuts, dried fruit, yogurt, and sliced fruit and veggies.

  1. Allow some wiggle room

Slip-ups happen, and so do special occasions. Be gentle to yourself if you give into that slice of pizza or nibble on a decadent piece of birthday cake. Balance is essential in life, and as long as you stay focused on your long-term health goals, an indulgence once in a while won't ruin your plans. A healthy weight management mentality starts with loving and understanding yourself, not imposing strict rules and beating yourself up.

  1. If you're stuck, switch it up

There comes the point in most people's weight loss journeys when they hit a "plateau" and stop seeing the pounds melt off as they did in the beginning. That's okay! Your routine may need to evolve to account for the new changes in your body. A doctor, dietician, or fitness expert can suggest specific modifications to help you break through the stall.

  1. Use the "buddy system"

If you have a friend or partner who also wants to lose weight, do it together! You can keep one another accountable – and make it more fun. Join a workout or dance class you both like, get together to prep healthy meals for the week, go hiking together, and celebrate each other’s wins. Even when you can't spend time together, encourage from afar.

  1. Be patient: it takes time

When it comes to losing weight in a healthy way, slow-and-steady is the key. Lifestyle changes aren't quick fixes, and the results take time. Do your best to enjoy the journey and appreciate how much better you feel as you implement new healthy changes.
