Diagnosis Statistics

Breast cancer is a risk for most women. It can affect all ages, races, and ethnicities. Some of the most important diagnosis statistics include:

Survival Rates

Breast cancer survival rates depend heavily on its stage at the discovery, whether it has spread to other parts of the body, and the treatment plan. In general, survival rates are significantly higher when its detected early. The 5-year relative survival rates by stage are:

  • Stage 0-I: close to 100%
  • Stage II: about 93%
  • Stage III: about 72%
  • Stage IV: about 22%

This data makes it undeniably clear that early detection is the key to your survival. Discover medical recommendations for maintaining your breast health at any age here.

Risk Factors

Although most people perceive breast cancer as a genetic disease, between only 5-10% of cases are linked to family history or genetic predisposition. Take note of the factors that can increase and decrease your risk.

Some factors that increase risk include:

  • Age
  • Alcohol use
  • Body weight
  • BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation
  • Breast and bone density
  • Menopause hormone therapy (estrogen and progestin)
  • Family or personal history
  • Radiation exposure

Some factors that decrease risk include:

  • Breastfeeding
  • Eating fruits and vegetables
  • Exercise
